Used them the last 2 years and it has been free as advertised. The site is somewhat difficult to navigate, but what can you expect for a free service.

Refused 1099-R from Roth IPC

I did a 401(k) In-Plan Conversion in 2024. This was a taxable event, since I was converting Pre-Tax dollars to Roth dollars. This produced a 1099-R with box 1 nonzero; box 7 having code “G”; and box 2a equal to box 1.Their website refused to accept this form, stating “There is an error with the information you submitted. If the distribution code below is 6, H, or G, the taxable amount must be zero for this system”.When I contacted support about this, they claimed that “The taxable amount is 0” on my conversion, which is obviously false and dangerously misleading. When I followed up on this, support also advised me to check a box on their website’s 1099-R entry form to indicate “a Roth Conversion”. However, the only such box they have is for amounts which are “not shown in your Form 1099-R…converted to a Roth IRA” — which would be blatantly incorrect for my conversion and the 1099-R I actually received.

Incorrect information

It was easy to put the information in but when I had to do an amendment for a seperate issue, the 1040 number were not correct. My refund should have been much more than what it was. Will never use again.

I cannot believe the IRS advertises for this scammy website. From my experience, as with others above, it is glitchy and there is no way to erase your account once you've supplied them with your very sensitive information. Non-existent customer service. I'm very nervous now having registered my social with them.

False advertising targeting low income folks

I chose fileyourtaxes.com from the IRS's list of "trusted partners" and clearly meet the eligibility requirements listed to file for free (my age and income are well within the permitted limits). After going through the entire process and submitting my return, they informed me it would be $55 for the federal return. How can the IRS allow this??? They should be removed from the trusted partners list and added to "unethical companies to avoid" list. It's blatant false advertising preying on lower income folks like me. Oh, and when I tried to call them, their website warns that email is free but calling them comes with "fees". And not surprisingly, they haven't responded to any of my emails.

My FileYourTaxes Nightmare

My federal return was filed successfully -- finally! After several rejections. I owed. The New York State return, based on the same information, proposed an enormous - and to me unbelievable -- refund. Rejected, however, continuously. FYT offered no help. The software was clearly glitchful, and nothing further could be done. They begged off with no practical solution. The impénétrable software led me in circles, with no, absolutely no recourse, nor means to a solution. I seriously wonder whether the payment I was led to believe went to the IRS actually goes to FYT. This is a "resource" for fools unable or unwilling to use legitimate accountants, preys on those who cannot afford to do so, and are witless when it comes to doing it themselves, which given tbe intricacies of the hopelessly convoluted IRS process, is not necessarily à fault of their own. FYT is not exactly à scam, per se, it's just à poor alternative for the credulous and the poor.

Charged $50 to File: Beware

Charged $50 to file despite being "free" and verified by the IRS. Absolute scumbags and will never use them again. Will tell everyone I know not to use them, too.

I used the site because the IRS linked…

I used the site because the IRS linked to it as a "Trusted Partner" for the free filing option for anyone with an AGI under $79,000. Went through the whole process of filling everything out for the past 3 hours, only to find (at the veeeery end) that they want to charge me $55 for federal and $50 for state filing. No free option. And My AGI is under $60k.

I can't call this site a scam

I can't call this site a scam, because it's vouched for by the IRS, but their customer service and entire website is a mess. Last year I thought I filed everything correctly, and despite clicking on the IRS's "file for free" link, I didn't question paying the fee at the end because I filed past the deadline. This year as I was filing my 2022 taxes, I found out that my return last year had been rejected which has never happened before. As I filed this year, again using the "file for free" link, I was forced to pay a fee at the end despite filing my taxes before the deadline. I was told by a customer service rep that the link must have rerouted me through the paid service. I never chose the paid option, so I should not have to pay the fee. Now my 2022 return has been rejected, and I have to paper file. I was told the fees would be refunded because I'm paper filing, but the fees weren't refunded, and now I'm being told I still have to pay even if I paper file. I've never had this much trouble in the past with taxes. For whatever reason, my PIN is never accepted through this site despite being totally fine with other services I used. I'm also incredibly frustrated for them to have these hidden secret fees that they don't tell you about until the very end. One of the service reps said that they aren't trying to be sneaky by doing this, but then what other reason do you have for eliminating all transparency? TLDR: website is a mess, customer service reps are awful, and you'll end up paying hidden fees.
