Late. Like every time ABS is the Payroll Company
Late…due to an “I.T. Meltdown”. Or “Solar Flares”, or a wire-transfer glitch. I don’t know who runs ABS, but my gut tells me they’re a running-dog lackey of the AMPTP. Production blames ABS, and doesn’t question whatever ABS says. ALSO, ABS snail-mails your paystubs to your home address. They may or may not send a .pdf of all the stubs to the Production Office. On the shows I’ve done with ABS, Production didn’t tell the crew this…I knew to ask, because on a previous show, ABS said sending them to the Home Address was their policy. We had to raise holy hell to get them to give us our stubs on location. This is actually a big deal, because without your stub, there’s no way to audit your pay until the show’s wrapped, you’re back home, and the Production Office has packed-up and gone.

My experience with ABS Payroll was fantastic, and I strongly recommend their services. In the fall of 2017 I served as PM on my first narrative feature, and it was my first time working with SAG and a payroll company after years of working on lots of smaller non-union projects. Throughout the project, SAG proved to be far and away the most disorganized, bureaucratic, and unhelpful organization that I have ever encountered. But every step of the way, Jason Alexander and his team at ABS Paryoll went above and beyond to offer some of the best service I have received anywhere. They were ultra-responsive and friendly, and provided an easy-to-use online portal for document sharing and review. As a client with a small payroll to fulfill, I expected many times for them to be dismissive or slow to respond, knowing that they have lots of bigger fish clients to serve. But they made themselves available by phone and email readily, and were friendly and helpful long after I expected them to begin to blow me off. My most sincere thanks to Jason and his team.
