Fellow Don Quixote’s Try Film Success
All fellow Don Quixote’s, this is the resource you want! The free introductory master class on seven ways of funding a film has helped me much more than I expected.Initially, I was very skeptical that any nonprofit would be willing to touch my project with a 10 foot pole, but in the process of researching, I’ve discovered a goldmine of inspiration and resources. Even more than the potential for funding, the sense of having a team of like-minded people who have been attempting to find a way to carry this message without their audience running screaming from the room in terror or running them through with a pitchfork has been immensely helpful. But there’s more – I asked for sponsorship at my local food co-op, I know they don’t have money to spare, but I would’ve been happy if they could offer some food that would’ve gotten thrown out anyway, or just to put out a notice in their newsletter to help my numbers (show industry that there’s an audience). But to my surprise, the person who works there also volunteers at a media center in a nearby city, where they have grants that they are begging people to take. And she did not run screaming when I said what issue my show is here to address either. The confidence I’ve gotten from listening to podcasts on my topic, which resulted from the suggestion in the master class, and me feeling prepared and comfortable, comfortable, bringing up the hot button issue in a calm manner. (I may have a candidate to audition for one of the roles, too.)I don’t have to compromise my values for my part in this. While I don’t require others to adopt my values in order to participate in it, I was in doubt that I would be able to do the project at all. I didn’t think there was a way to do my part and have the money come without the money controlling the project, but now I’m feeling very hopeful that I will be able to do just that, and even have the project move its way toward its mission in the mainstream. We aren’t there yet, but the outlook is far better than a few weeks ago! Thank you for sharing this information. I encourage anyone who has a dream so crazy that they are feeling like a Don Quixote to go to one of Joanne‘s master classes.

Joanne's knowledge of the film business is encyclopedic
Joanne's knowledge of the film business is encyclopedic, meaning it's vast and incredibly in-depth. I came to her knowing I wanted to make a documentary film called "How to Save Democracy," and she took my desire and set me on a clear and concrete path to making it, from funding it to structuring and refining it. The results are a documentary feature film that landed a distributor and will be released for the general public on streaming platforms on Feb. 24, 2026.

A Practical Guide to Moving Forward as a Filmmaker or Learning How the Industry Actually Works.
I completed the six-month program with Filmmaker Success, run by Joanne Butcher, and it was a genuinely valuable and educational experience. What Joanne does exceptionally well is industry translation—demystifying the business side of filmmaking, from money and access to power dynamics and decision-making.The program combines group sessions and individual meetings and focuses on the practical realities of the industry: how to raise financing, talk to investors, analyze scripts beyond taste and theory, pitch effectively, and build a pitch deck that functions as a real business document—not just a mood board. Most importantly, it teaches what people are actually looking for and how decisions are truly made. What stood out most was how clearly Joanne breaks down how the industry actually works, not how we wish it worked. I came away with a much stronger sense of focus, strategy, and direction, and a clearer understanding of how to move my career forward in a realistic way. I learned a lot, and I’d strongly recommend this program to filmmakers who want clarity, structure, and real-world insight—and who are ready to take their work and their careers seriously. I am unsure of how to express my sincere gratitude. When I initially signed up to work with Joanne with Filmmaker Success there was a lot of anxiety and trepidation! I did not know what I was getting myself into, but it just felt RIGHT. I cannot begin to express how grateful I am for the knowledge, resources, support, feedback, and motivation to not only become a successful filmmaker, but to also learn the business of filmmaking! Joanne is a great educator, counselor, coach, mentor, strategist, and experienced leader who is there to assist and help you navigate the filmmaking process and avoid the pitfalls that other filmmakers fall into. She’s the real deal - so what are you waiting for?! And, as Joanne would say, “No EXCUSES!”

The Path Less Traveled
Before I saw Joanne Butcher speak at a virtual forum, I was on the path of getting my script(s) perfect so that someone, anyone, may deem me worthy of representation. And that is the easy part. Joanne changed everything by, not only shining a light on the path to making my film myself, but by walking the path (that she knows so well) with me. I’m a filmmaker now instead of a dreaming screenwriter. I am forever grateful to her and her team.

Working with Joanne Butcher has brought…
Working with Joanne Butcher has brought clarity, strategy, and confidence to my filmmaking pathI’m an award-winning documentary filmmaker running both a for-profit production company and a nonprofit focused on community storytelling. After years of strong creative output, festival recognition, PBS broadcast, and university adoption, I reached a point where I needed clearer strategy around funding, sustainability, and long-term career momentum.Working with Joanne Butcher has been incredibly grounding and eye-opening. She brings a rare combination of deep industry knowledge, practical fundraising strategy, and genuine care for the filmmaker as a whole — not just the project. Joanne doesn’t deal in vague inspiration; she focuses on execution, structure, and making sure filmmakers don’t leave money on the table. What stood out most to me is her ability to see both the creative and business sides clearly, and to connect them in a way that feels achievable and empowering. She asks the right questions, challenges assumptions respectfully, and helps you think bigger while staying realistic. If you’re a filmmaker who has strong work but needs help turning that work into sustainable income, funding, and forward motion, Joanne is an invaluable guide. I’m very excited to continue working with her and to build the next phase of my career with her support.— Jose M. Pichardo Jr.Documentary Filmmaker & Producer

The best guide to secure funds and find investors for your film
As a writer/ director/ producer Filmmaker Success coaching helped me tremendously in my production and fundraising process of my feature film. In 1:1 meetings, virtual guides and group sessions I learned what works, what to avoid, and last but not least felt empowered in my role from start to finish. I can only recommend Filmmaker Success highly, to first-time filmmakers as well as seasoned directors alike. The financial and business aspect of getting a film off the ground doesn't have to be difficult!
