Treat people better

From a cleaners point of view servicing these properties, this company would throw us under a bus at every opportunity to save their own skin! This industry is on its knees made worse by the corporate bull of Sykes and incorporated company Menai.Same incompetence same bad attitude. Remember without us...you can't even sell holidays!

Don't book with Menai

Don't book with these unless you want to deal with poor admin and no answers. I booked a holiday, paid over £600. Because I didn't take out the insurance I couldn't get any of my money back despite being unwell and now being unable to travel. I whattsapped them, no response other than it was getting passed to someone else and they would be in touch. They never got in touch. I called them twice, on hold for over 20 minutes each time and no answer. Emailed them and got no reply whatsoever. A family member called them on my behalf as I was in work and it's too long to wait on the phone, they had the same problem, then finally someone answered and refused to help because of GDPR. They didn't provide me with the property owners contact details to see if I could be refunded or partially refunded. So now, after being off work for 3 weeks with ill health I've now also lost over £600 which I really couldn't afford to lose at this time. I was even willing to provide them with medical documents to prove I'm not lying but their not interested.

Poor quality property and no customer service.

1) Dampness: all downstairs apart from the kitchen felt damp. Even though neither of us have allergies we both felt congested and coughed a lot when downstairs in the house. Outside and returning home our symptoms cleared immediately. The downstairs bathroom had plenty of evidence of dampness. The humidistat for the extractor was on constantly. Drops of water stayed for days. Obvious signs of long standing damp issues that the owners are obviously aware of from past comments and poor repairs.2) The carpets and seat covers are of poor quality and we would say it is impossible to keep clean after each change of guest. We felt them to be dirty and probably full of allergens from the dogs that stay and probably roam and sit on the furniture unchecked. The glass to doors low down had snuffle smears on them.Menai Holidays subsequently took no notice of, and no responsiblity for our comments.I would say avoid unless you have low standards.

Absolutely appalled

Absolutely appalled. Booked a cottage to stay at from tomorrow for 1 week. Taken time off work and made travel and family arrangements. I received an abrupt email last night to cancel the accomodation. I've sent 3 emails, left a voicemail and sent an Instagram message - no response. This is disgusting service and completely unacceptable.I've messaged the owner of the cottage, to be told that she informed Sykes/Menai 2 weeks ago that the property isn't habitable. But they have since failed to update their online system, took my booking and money, and have now LIED and said it was a recent "roof leak" that was unforeseen.

What a horrible experience to host with…

What a horrible experience to host with Menai Cottages was!The sales rep Bethan exaggerated, I'm being kind using that word, our possible income potential right from the start. Obviously after a while without any booking, I called them to ask what was wrong. They asked me to allow them to offer a discounted rate to generate booking which i agreed to and that's when the trouble started. We received a booking from Menai Cottages for £327 for an entire week before their commission was deducted! Shocking! We get more than than from Airbnb for a weekend! When I complained I was told that I had agreed to a discount and that i was in a contract and had to pay to cancel it. The final straw came when after months of no contact, we received a booking that wasn't convenient due to hospital appointments but when I explained the situation, Menai Cottages threatened me with legal action for breach of contract and, ridiculously, told me I had to pay for their guests holiday elsewhere if I didn't host them, obviously this would never be the case but the fact they they used this as a threat told me everything and I needed to know about this horrible company. We're out of contract now thankfully and using another cottage let company really successfully.

Filthy, mouldy house. Carreg Y Garth, Caernarfon.

Stayed at Carreg Y Garth outside Caernarfon. The house was gorgeous but filthy. Thick layers of dust (see profile photo for example), mould in children’s bedroom, hair on the toilet and carpet, hair bobbles and hairbrush left laying around. Complained on day one. They sent a 9 month pregnant cleaner (and her son)round while we were in the property (despite me asking for a cleaner to come the following day). She was at the house for 30 minutes and it was still filthy, we felt very uncomfortable. Asked for cleaning fee to be refunded. Was told the owner didn’t want to and they couldn’t enforce it. I actually booked via Sykes so don’t know why I was only dealing with Menai Holidays.

Gorgeous property

Have just had a weeks stay at flip flops Rhosneigr. The accommodation is superb. Really clean and comfortable with beautiful views of the beach. The lounge has a wonderful picture window. The owners are lovely and are on hand should you need any assistance. Will definitely return to stay here. Tom and Paula

Emails not replied to. No customer service

Stayed at Anvil House in Beaumaris...booked through Menai holidays. A bit of a dump. They put in claim of £140 for accidental damage to shower and staining of sheets. Fair enough, accidents happen, although I feel the shower base was protruding, possible glued, and I hurt my foot on it. Regardless, all OK if you are insured. They took £140 out of my account, but had no interest in us once we started asking about how to claim the money back, even though we had paid 36 pounds for insurance covering accidental damage. Four or five emails, not replied to, so I guess we take the £140 and £36 loss, but we are not happy with them. We are both mentally disabled and needed to know how to claim. I asked my brother to help us, and he works in IT for HSBC - Even he couldnt find an easy way to claimUpdate : Managed to get an email address from the original insurance documents, but we got an automated reply as its a big insurance group. It said to look at our policy documents to get correct department. We found it was under Sykes Cotages insurance, but when we phoned them, they told us to refer back to policy as it was a third party insurance. Going in circles. Why not just simple link to claim? Oh, because some people may just let it go because its complicated - maybe mentally disabled people like us? Thanks Menai Holidays for the fake insurance Wont be booking again. Thanks to my brother for helping me write this.

Spent first day of holiday cleaning

Booked Crows Nest in Rhosneigr through Menai. Keysafe instructions were wrong. Downstairs bedroom has strong smell of urine, some windows wouldn’t open, dishwasher filthy and full of old food, freezer had bug in it and dirty, oven trays filthy, dishwasher button pushed in, toilet flush not working properly. I spent the first day cleaning and reported with videos to housekeeper Adam in the listing but he said we needed to contact Charlotte so we sent information to Charlotte but heard nothing from either of them in the 10 days. The cottage would be lovely but you don’t expect to have to clean when you arrive. I contacted Menai several times over the holiday and all I got was on day 7 shall we send someone round to clean - what was the point when I had done and wouldn’t have wanted to wait 7 days. I asked for compensation for ruined first day and cost of cleaning materials but Menai and housekeepers refused. I am sure they would deduct £100 housekeeping bond if we had left the property in the condition we found it but if we want to charge them it’s a NO. Crockery needed washing as it had been washed prior to our arrival in filthy dishwasher so had food bits stuck to it. Dishwasher button pushed in so dangerous for trapping fingers. Dog poo was in the garden from previous people which we had to pick up. These photos are just some of the images of the issues we had. At least the next family would have had a nice clean Crows Nest house 47 Ger Y Mor Rhosneigr thanks to me and not the cleaners/housekeepers. Would not recommend Menai or Crows Nest

Cartrefle Cottage Anglesey

We booked a cottage last year which was appalling. There was no QR code to scan in - even though this was a legal requirement at the time. The outside bin had not been emptied and was overflowing. There wasn't a wardrobe in the cottage or anywhere to hang clothes. There where a number of damp patches on the bedroom walls. The bathroom was in need of cleaning, the shower tray was cracked and the water pressure was really low. The fridge had ice on the back. On complaining the customer relations team took no active responsibilty - stating we should have complained at the time of stay! Would not rebook with them and would advise others not to

Very disappointing - owner sought access during our stay

Very disappointing. My husband and I booked Tri Raglan Bach in Beaumaris through Menai Holiday Cottages - The apartment itself was as advertised and in a clean state. However, family members of the owner tried to let themselves into the property close to midnight on the first night of our stay, arguing that our booking had been cancelled (even though I had all confirmation emails from Menai/Sykes for our booking and the property access details). There was at least two men trying to gain entry, and they were quite clearly intoxicated, and continued to insist that we were in the wrong. On asking them politely to leave, I rang the property owner who stated that we had no booking and that the fault was on us and was in no way apologetic. Due to this situation we were forced to leave the following morning, two nights early. At the time I was 7 months pregnant and this was the last holiday my husband and I had booked before the arrival of our baby, and this unpleasant confrontation unfortunately completely ruined it. We have since been seeking a refund for our stay based on the disruption and confrontation that occurred, but unfortunately Menai Holidays/Sykes and the owner have not provided this, and have not responded to us when they have agreed to. This is a real disappointment as I have previously used Menai Holidays/Sykes and been happy with the service but unfortunately I would no longer use any of their holiday cottages.

No reply for a month or wait on hold

Pretty poor customer service when you email. It took me a month to get a reply from them owner regarding a complaint to then just shove it under the carpet and said you should have told us sooner! They don't answer the phones very quickly and you can be left on hold for a long time. Not what you need. There are better companies on Anglesey, that treat their customers much better.

Capel Ogwen. Dirty unloved property.

Capel Ogwen. The only nice thing about this property is its location so if you're looking for somewhere to spend quality time with friends or family, - find somewhere else! On arrival we were greeted by an appallingly dirty kitchen, ovens, cutlery, cupboards and hand written notes telling us the oven wasn't working and that we should not light the open fire as the chimney was blocked. Also handles were missing off cupboard doors in the kitchen leaving screws sticking out instead. A phone call to Menai was met with a surly response and no apology. The staff who attended to perform the supposed "deep clean" the following day rudely and angrily complained to us that they had to "give up my Sunday for you!" After their visit there was still filth left on the kitchen floor and loose left over sweetcorn in the freezer. Unacceptable. There was no spare cupboard space for food items and the fridge/freezer size is completely inadequate for a property supposed to accommodate 12 people. There was damp peeling plaster in the lounge and the sofas were so grubby we had to cover them with our own blankets before we could sit on them. The dining room table was covered in a sticky film making it too gross to use. Bed mattresses are old lumpy and uncomfortable and the difficulty sleeping was not helped by the cockerels in the hen house next door crowing loudly from 3.30am til dawn! The two showers both have black grimy sealants on the interior - the sort of shower cabinet where you don't want to be in there in case you touch the sides. We expected to be compensated for the dreadful state we found this property in and sent photographs- but No - Menai and the owners refused to consider any monetary recompense whatsoever. Will not use this company again and suggest you don't either.

DO NOT book with the company

DO NOT book with the company. I rang 3 times before we arrived as I had read bad reviews re cleanliness etc and my husband has been shielding. Nobody rang me back, eventually on my 4th call I was assured that the housekeeping issues had been resolved. Not so!! And I have a selection of photos as proof. The set up at the top of the stairs as you come out of the middle bedroom is highly dangerous and I cannot believe any holiday company would pass this - my husband fell badly and bashed his knee, which was painful and very swollen, so that put paid to our planned walks and we had to buy painkillers and anti inflammatory drugs. To put the tin hat on it, I left a brand new pair of jeans on a hook on the back of the bedroom door. I have had to make TEN phone calls over three and a half weeks (apparently nobody could get hold of the caretaker!!) I was told that they hadn't been found and someone else was staying there now. So, if the place had been cleaned properly they would have been found. I was promised so many times that I would be called back and this happened twice. Absolutely disgusting!!

Think twice before booking

The staff are clearly nice enough people, but their administration seems quite arcane, and isn't good at getting the customer what they need. The confusing site makes it easy to make a wrong booking. They make it very hard to get your money back. I was on hold for 2hrs 15 minutes before I gave up.Finally I did get my booking changed, but it was a long and arduous process.

Now owned by Sykes - nightmare!

Menai Holidays is now owned by Sykes Cottages - avoid at all costs. Pass the buck to the owner whenever there is a problem and unfairly say they have no responsibility, even though holidays are booked with them and funds paid to Sykes. We had dealings with Menai before they were bought by Sykes and they were fine, but sadly no more. Many independent cottage brands have been bought out by Sykes, so check the T&C's before booking.

Never book with Menai Holidays

Menai holidays should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. During a global and national emergency when people cannot travel due to the coronavirus lockdown, they are insisting on company terms and conditions and refusing to refund our booking. This is simply appalling behaviour for any company at any time but especially now when so many people are struggling and deeply concerned about money. The T&C's that state that cancellations are not allowed are hidden deep in their website and not flagged up at the time of booking. The company state that they are allowing 'amendments' to bookings so customers can move to another time. If you don't actually want to move to another time - as I don't - then it's just too bad. Indecent and truly dreadful way to treat customers at a time like this. When I queried it with them, they sent me the most evasive and pointless response imaginable. It's simply not good enough to say you can't have a refund during a NATIONAL LOCKDOWN!I will never use this company again and recommend everyone avoid them like COVID-19.
