The filing was easy. The only frustrating part is that for 2 years in a row I paid to have my taxes printed and mailed to me. I have not received them from either year. Trying to reach someone is virtually impossible. I’m disappointed in having to deal with this.
I started using Freetaxusa to file my taxes and some friends in 2023 and it was great, but in 2024 everything changed, The system keeps declining the credit card to pay tje state tax return fee for no reasons. Sometimes we use our debit cards and different credit cards but that doesn't work. It's a pain.I think this is the last year we'll be using Freetaxusa. Waste of time and energy
I would give this 3.5 stars. For the most part everything is fine. The part I have a problem with is figuring credit for taxes paid to another state. We live in Illinois and my husband works in Indiana as we are right on the border. In the past I've used Turbo tax and it will figure the credit for me. It will say something like "great! Here is your credit for taxes paid to Indiana, we will insert this number on your Illinois form". Freetaxusa is soooo confusing in their wording that's it super frustrating trying to figure out the credit. It doesn't tell you that you need to do your other state first and use a number from that to input into your home state form. It uses confusing lingo and every year I have to refer back to the year before to see what number I used. Even if they said "do your other state first and use line number xx and insert on line xx on your instate form" or something of that nature. This is software that the average person should be able to use and while I was tired of paying Turbo Tax the high fees, they were soo much better at figuring and inserting this number without the horrible explanation on "figure it out yourself" on FreeTaxUsa
Such a Rip off...I wasn't able to file electronically after doing my return. I mailed a paper tax return but forgot to remove their bank. They charged me $40 total pit of my state return that was only $67.00. Good riddance to them. I won't use them again and I stopped advising people to use it
Spent 2 hours doing my taxes on turbotax just to be told it was gonna cost me over $100. Came to freetaxUSA and did it all over again and it was free and easy. Do your taxes here instead yall!

If something happens and I don’t get my return, I’ll change this rating. But that was a lot easier than TurboTax and a whole hell of a lot cheaper. I don’t have a complicated return, I shouldn’t pay what I’ve been paying the last couple years.
I've been using FreeTaxUSA ever since I needed to file my taxes, so 4 years now. It's always been a great experience. I've had to contact support twice total to clarify what the software was asking, and both times they clearly answered all of my questions within a day. Even when you don't qualify for free state returns, it is an excellent value.
It has worked excellently for me for many years. I really enjoy how easy it is every time, and how much less stressful it feels having the little ? symbols to explain things. Thank you for just working for most of the years I have use it.
First time filing with them free in 2024. Paid customer in 2025. Blew me away with how smooth it was. However, a poorly worded question in 2024 caused a knock-on effect in 2025 where I had to file a federal and two state return amendments for 2024 before filing 2025. Then I had to pay $17.00 for the 2024 amendment, and spent $8.00 on support which wasn't very helpful. Asked for waiver/refund of the $17.00 and it was comical how they dodged the question.
I wish I would have known there are Free sites to do state taxes. My refund is not a lot of money and free tax USA charged me $41 to do my state taxes 15.99 for the state taxes and another 24.98 to take the 15.99 out of my return. Last year I use them especially like I said there are Free sites for state and federal. Just wanted to warn others keep your refund and don't give a portion of it to this site . When I asked for a refund of charges their customer service did not give a damn about giving me one . I do Google reviews as a means to warn people of my mistake so they don't make the same one . I'm 62 and don't bring in a lot of money so $41 is a lot for me .
I tried them out over turbo tax and my tax refund was never sent to my direct deposit with them. They kept redirecting me to the tracker link to the irs. That link from the irs said to check with the tax preparer, which is them. It was supposed to be in my account on the first week of February two weeks ago, according to them. My bank information was correct but neither my state or federal return made it to me. They charged me immediately for the state return after I filed and I never got any of my refunds. Their support system is just bots that repeat the same thing to you, hoping you’ll give into buying “premium” support.Do not use them! Edit: I see they’re back to using the bot response again. The irs has already stated my refund was submitted and it’s an issue with my preparer. I’m tired of this back and forth. That support email and “live agent” service is not going to an actual human representative. It’s going back to their bot who’s going to copy the same response again once it sees refund in my response.Edit 1: I finally got my refund even though it took the full amount of days. Their customer service shifting the blame to the IRS after making me wait a full day was completely unprofessional.
Ive used this site to do my taxes for years now,this year i opted for pro support to ask a few questions about the new OT tax rules. Do not waste your money. They provided blatantly incorrect tax information and cited the irs website as the source saying OT rule didnt take affect and there was mo way for me to file or anywhere for that information to be broken out. I asked why the irs website has the same calculation break down as their site and why it was forcing me to enter info into a box. Next message was a supervisor telling me the OT rule was valid and it does have to be filed. Then 2 days or run around asking the same 3 questions and getting a new person every single response just giving the same link to the break down. I had it reviewed before submitting twice during the chat session. Once clarification had been provided on the figure i asked for it to be reviewed once more. Someone DIFFERENT responded and told me they only check them at step 2 of finalizing. No one can even scroll up and look at the chat history. They know NOTHING, and its mot worth the $80+ for 'pro' support. I don't think these people are even certified
I’ve used FreeTaxUSA for two years now after getting fed up with H&R Block - won’t get into that. But I love this site. Super easy and quick
I have been using FreeTaxUSA for a few years now and each year it was a 5 star experience.
I efiled my federal and state taxes on 1/25/26 and TaxFreeUSA owned by Tax Hawk stated my taxes were accepted by the IRS and the State of Colorado on 1/26/26. I have contacted them for a refund because as of today, 2/11/26, they still do not have my taxes. TaxFreeUSA informed me it would take weeks and if I wanted any further information, I would have to pay to upgrade my account. I can file my taxes directly on the State of Colorado website and they would have them now, but you are not allowed to file twice. Last year they blamed a delay on a tabor refund. Two years of issues with state taxes. I spoke with the tax division and they said TaxFreeUSA is giving me false information. I want my $15.99 that I paid for the State taxes refunded and have filed a BBB complaint.
They do not have all credits for 2025. Showed us owing alot of money. Went on another site entered exact same information and we are getting back a decent amount.
This was a great experience. The application was easy to use and it pulls from my previous years to help fill in information.Places like Turbotax makes you pay for access to your previous information or they will delete it and make you manually add everything in again.
Revised this on 3-5-2026They do Federal return 100% free if income is low enough, they all (free tax software) have income limits. Free Tax USA sent me a msg stating ALL FED RETURNS E-file are free within in income limits .They FLASH a page about YOUR FED & STATE TAX RETURN ARE FREE Before you file final returns. But UDERSTANDABLY, do have charges for SOME things.BUT NOT Obviously listed or shown in the tax Software. AT LEAST when i did my returns, not listed that i could find. .You should GO TO their website FIRST & READ WHAT THEY DO CHARGE MONEY FOR. B E F O R E YOU DO YOUR tax RETURN(s).Look for things like:E-file Vs USA mail for State OR Federal income levelsIf you miss something & have to file an amended return Also PROCESSING FEES I'm unsure if, how & when or how much those processing fees are charged. The software is EASY TO USE. However my taxes are extremely simple. .I DO NOT KNOW IF THE FOLLOWING IS/IS NOT Supported, by this software:AND I AM JUST AN AVERAGE PERSON, NOT An accountant or lawyer.It appears to be complete. If your taxes are above the max $ limits, you may want to use it any way & pay for it. .Explore their website in detail for things you may need & make sure its supported, like: small business. Depreciation on rental property, recapturing depreciation, sales of depreciated equipment or inventory, that you sell, long term capital gains treatment, especially if your on Soc Sec, Soc Sec has some gotcha rules that can cost you a LOT, YOU NEED TO KNOW At least a year to yr & a half before you take Soc Sec some of the traps to tax you. alternative minimum taxes etcAgain I'm just an average person. If you need legal advice or tax advice go to a lawyer or CPA.
Their website deleted a form after I entered it, unbeknownst to me. It affected my return amount significantly, so I needed to file a return. They would not waive the fee to file an amendment. So I ended up needing to pay $35 to file, which is not free despite their name. Very disappointed in their refusal to fix their mistake. I would have happily gone through the trouble of the amendment if they had just met me in the middle and covered the extra cost. I’ll go back to H&R next year. They’ve never messed up, the process is faster, and it ended up being the same price.
